Procedure

Breast Implant Removal is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a pre-existing silicone or saline implant. There are many reasons that a woman may want to have her breast implants removed, including:

  • Address stretched or distorted breast tissue caused by the implants
  • Change in personal preference or lifestyle that can affect the desirability of the implants
  • Desire for a more natural and symmetrical appearance of the breasts
  • Enhanced self-esteem and body image
  • Experience complications from the implants, such as infection, rupture, or capsular contracture
  • Helps avoid future complications that may arise with the implant
  • Hormonal imbalances or changes in the body
  • Improved ability to monitor breast health
  • No longer wanting the implants
  • Relief from pain or discomfort caused by the implant

Please keep in mind that after having breast implants, your skin will stretch to accommodate the size of your breasts, so once removed your may experience sagging, drooping, or misshapen breasts. This can be treated with a Breast Lift, which will give your breasts a perkier and fuller appearance.

Dr. Ahmadi is a highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon who will not only help you rid yourself of unwanted implants but also strives to help you regain your original, natural look.

First Steps

The first step in getting Breast Implant Removal in Houston is to contact Avante Plastic Surgery and schedule your consultation. When you come into our office and meet with Dr. Ahmadi, he will evaluate your breasts and ask you some questions about your medical and lifestyle history. It’s very important that when having your consultation, you be open and honest with Dr. Ahmadi because it will help him make the best choices for you to achieve optimal results and avoid unnecessary risks. He will also listen to your concerns, answer any of your questions, and explain the procedure in more detail. Dr. Ahmadi will use all of the information he collects and create your personalized surgical plan. If you agree with the plan he makes, our Patient Coordinator will schedule your procedure and provide you with some pre-op instructions to follow.

Expectations

On the day of your surgery, we will begin by administering anesthesia, which could be in the form of intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. This will be decided on during your consultation. Once you are under, Dr. Ahmadi will begin by making an incision either around the areola or under the lower fold of your breasts. Through this incision, the implant will be removed, as well as any scar tissue. If you are having an implant removal in conjunction with an implant revision, he will then insert the new implant. Once he is finished, he will close the incisions with either stitches, tape, or skin adhesives.

The surgery will last between one and three hours.

Recovery

After surgery, we will monitor you for a while as you come out of sedation. Once you are released that same day, you will be able to return home to recover, but you will need a friend or family member available to provide you with a ride home and stay with you for a day or so for additional assistance. We will require you to wear a support bra or compression garment to reduce any swelling. Dr. Ahmadi may also temporarily leave small tubes in the incisions to help drain excess fluid or blood. These drains are normally removed within a few days, but some patients may require them for a little longer (about 10 days).

You should avoid certain activities, like driving, for the first week or so, and avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting. You can expect to be sore or tender for up to six weeks, but this can be treated with ice packs and over-the-counter medications.

Cost

The cost of Breast Implant Removal in Houston is dependent on many factors, including the technique used to remove them. The best way to find out how much your procedure will cost is to come in for your consultation and have Dr. Ahmadi create your surgical plan. With this plan, our Patient Coordinator can provide you with an exact breakdown of the cost of your procedure.

FAQ

is breast implant removal painful

No. This surgery is performed under anesthesia so you shouldn’t experience any pain during your surgery. It is common to feel sore and tender during your recovery. Dr. Ahamdi will prescribe some temporary pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort during the initial stage of your recovery.

How many appointments will I need?

Dr. Ahmadi will have you return within a few days to remove any sutures and tubing and evaluate your recovery. After that you can expect a few more check-up appointments, usually within a week or so post-operative, and then again at around three months. Every patient will have a different recovery process so you may require additional appointments. Dr. Ahmadi will always let you know if and when he expects to see you again.

How long until I see results?

Depending on the degree of change, you can see results almost immediately after surgery. There will be some swelling and bruising that takes place, so you won’t see your final results until after they subside. Some patients can see results within a few weeks, while others may need up to a year after the procedure.

can I combine breast implant removal with other procedures?

Absolutely! Many of our Houston Breast Implant Removal patients will combine their surgery with a Breast Lift or Breast Implant Revision to fix or alter their previous implant’s appearance. Other great surgeries to pair with your removal would be contouring procedures like a Tummy Tuck or LipoTuck™. If you have a certain aesthetic goal or would like to hear Dr. Ahmadi’s expert recommendations, please discuss this during your consultation.

What are the risks associated with breast implant removal?

Breast Implant Removal is a procedure with minimal to zero complications, however, every surgery does carry some risks. One of the most common risks is feeling dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts after surgery, but Dr. Ahmadi and his team have the experience and great plastic surgery record that this is a very rare experience. Other complications of implant removal can include:

Bleeding
Asymmetry
Seroma or bodily fluid collecting in the space where the implant was
Infection
Loose skin
Numbness or changes in nipple sensation.
Scarring

While most of these side effects are to be expected and will heal on their own, if you have any long-lasting or concerning reactions, please contact our office so that we can help.
