Procedure

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts. This surgery is typically sought after by women who experience physical discomforts from oversized breasts, such as chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain, skin irritation, and difficulty finding clothes that fit comfortably.

In addition to physical discomforts such as back and shoulder pain, overly large breasts can cause emotional and psychological distress, such as low self-esteem, weight gain, and self-consciousness due to undesired body proportions. Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess breast tissue, excess fat, and skin and reshaping the remaining tissue to create a smaller and more proportional breast size.

Women choose to undergo the plastic surgery procedure for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Physical discomfort, such as neck pain
  • Shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Difficulty with physical activities
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Medical conditions

While getting breast implants can improve the quality of life for many women with lighter breasts, those with exceptionally large breasts can benefit from the surgery to alleviate some of the aforementioned conditions and concerns. For example, drooping breasts can be caused by excess weight, leading to discomfort and low self-esteem. The procedure can help make heavy breasts perkier and more lightweight.

Breast Reduction Incisions

Several common incision patterns are used in the surgery, including the anchor, lollipop, and periareolar techniques:

  • The anchor technique involves incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease, resulting in an anchor-shaped scar.
  • The lollipop technique involves a circular incision around the areola and a vertical incision down to the breast crease, resulting in a lollipop-shaped scar.
  • The periareolar technique involves a circular incision around the areola, resulting in a typically less noticeable scar.

While scars are a natural part of the process, Dr. Ahmadi takes steps to minimize scarring and promote optimal healing. This may include using techniques to minimize tension on the incision lines, using absorbable sutures, and providing specific post-operative instructions for wound care.

It’s important to remember that every patient’s healing process from plastic surgery is unique, and the extent of scarring will vary from person to person. Generally, breast reduction surgery scars tend to fade over time and become less noticeable. Patients need to follow any post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize scarring.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the surgery is most women who experience physical and emotional discomfort and limitations due to large breasts. The surgery performed on these women typically relieves physical problems and discomfort and creates more aesthetically-pleasing breasts.

Am I a candidate for the

“Short Scar” Procedure

The “short scar” procedure is a type of breast reduction surgery that uses a shorter incision technique to reduce scarring and recovery time. This surgical procedure avoids the inframammary fold scar. This procedure may suit patients with mild to moderate breast sagging who do not require significant tissue removal.

Candidates for the “short scar” breast reduction procedure are typically women with good skin elasticity and minimal excess skin. They should have realistic expectations for the procedure and good overall health. This procedure may not be suitable for women with very large breasts or significant breast sagging, as more extensive tissue removal and reshaping may be required.

What’s the first step for a

Breast Reduction

During your breast reduction consultation, Dr. Ahmadi will examine your medical history and assess your breast size and shape. Dr. Ahmadi will then discuss your expectations and goals for the procedure and any potential risks and complications.

Dr. Ahmadi will take measurements of the breasts and evaluate the nipple position, skin elasticity, and breast symmetry. He will also discuss the surgical techniques available, such as the anchor, vertical, donut, or horizontal pattern method, and recommend the best technique and treatment plan for you.

So much depends on the specific procedure being performed. Generally speaking, however, most patients can expect a significant reduction in breast size, improved shape and position, and a more balanced and symmetrical appearance of newly shaped breasts. The recovery times range from about three weeks to about six weeks.

Expectations

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia and involves the following steps:

1. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision with lines around the areola complex and down to the breast crease.

2. Excess fat, breast tissue, and skin are removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped and lifted to create a smaller, more proportional breast size.

3. The incisions are closed with sutures, and a surgical bra or dressing is applied to support the breasts while the patient heals.

Breast reduction techniques used during surgery may vary depending on the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s preferences. Common techniques used for breast reduction include the anchor, vertical, and horizontal pattern methods. Dr. Ahmadi will discuss the technique best suits you during the initial consultation.

After your surgery, you will be fitted with a compression garment that will help prevent excessive swelling.

Recovery

Most surgical procedures involve a recovery period in which patients are monitored by medical staff as they wake from anesthesia. During your breast reduction recovery may experience some swelling, bruising, and nipple sensitivity in the first few days after the surgery, and pain medication will be prescribed to manage any mild discomfort. You will be encouraged to wear your surgical bra for a few more weeks for added support, and you should avoid any heavy lifting as you heal. Patients often have questions about breast reduction scars. It’s important to note that breast reduction scars are common but will fade over time.

Cost

The average breast reduction cost in Houston, TX starts at $9,000. The specific amount you can expect to pay will likely depend on the type of breast reduction procedure involved, which you want to be performed, anesthesia fees, and what extra services, if any, you require. Once you get your treatment plan created by Dr. Ahmadi, our Patient Coordinator will be able to show you a complete breakdown of the costs.

FAQ

Is breast reduction surgery painful?

We do the surgery with you sedated, with either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on what is discussed during your consultation. You can expect to feel sore and tender for two to three days after your surgery, so Dr. Ahmadi will prescribe you temporary pain medication. In some cases, we may advise placing wrapped ice packs gently over sore areas to help with pain and swelling, and there may be some numbness in your breasts and nipples for up to a year.

Will I be able to breastfeed?

The surgery can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, as the procedure involves removing some of the glandular tissue and ducts in the breast that produce and transport milk. However, it is still possible for some women to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery.

The extent to which the surgery affects breastfeeding depends on several factors, including the amount of glandular tissue removed, the surgical technique used, and the location of the incisions. Generally, the more tissue removed, the greater the risk of breastfeeding difficulties.

If you plan to have children and breastfeed in the future, it is important to discuss this with Dr. Ahmadi during the initial consultation process. Dr. Ahmadi can help assess the patient’s individual situation and make recommendations based on your goals and priorities.

In some cases, it may be possible to preserve more of the glandular tissue and ducts during the surgery to increase the chances of successful breastfeeding later. It’s important to remember that breastfeeding success is not guaranteed after breast reduction surgery, and every woman’s situation is unique.

How many appointments will I need?

In the weeks following your Breast Reduction Surgery in Houston, any swelling from the surgery will slowly reduce and when you come in for your follow-up appointment, Dr. Ahmadi will remove your dressings and any sutures. After that, you will need to return for a few more follow-ups over the next year, but this will be determined by how your body heals. After each appointment, you will be told if and when you should return.

How long until I see results from breast reduction surgery?

There will be some immediately visible changes after your surgery, but it depends on how much breast tissue was removed. Most patients will see the best results within 6 to 12 weeks.

Can I combine breast reduction with other procedures?

Of course! Most of our patients will combine their full treatment plan with other body contouring procedures, such as a Tummy TuckBreast LiftBreast Augmentation, or even a Brazilian Butt Lift. If you would like to have any additional areas of your body worked on, please discuss this with Dr. Ahmadi and he will be able to give you his expert suggestions.

Does Breast Reduction Surgery Help with Breast Cancer?

Studies have shown that there is no increased risk of breast cancer after breast reduction surgery, but can have a significantly decreased risk in women followed for an average of 6.5 years.

What are the risks associated with breast reduction surgery?

As with any surgery, scarring is a normal part of the process with breast reduction surgery. The extent and location of scarring after the surgery will depend on the surgical technique used and how the individual patient heals. Some additional risks associated with Breast Reduction include scarring, temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the nipples and breasts, and difficulty breastfeeding. These side effects may be noticeable immediately, the day after breast reduction surgery varies after, or even further down the road.

Does a reduction mammaplasty remove excess breast tissue?

Breast Reduction surgery does remove fat, breast tissue, and excess skin from your breasts. For patients with larger breasts, this surgery can ease discomfort, improve appearance, and offer a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Can I combine a breast lift with a breast reduction

The good news is that with breast reduction, a breast lift will also be part of the surgery. Most patients that have heavy breasts or shoulder pains request a breast reduction. At our Houston office, Dr. Ahmadi pairs the two plastic surgery procedures together.

What does a breast reduction procedure involve

Breast reductions are a plastic surgery procedure that involves removing skin and tissue from the breasts to reduce their size. Once the skin and tissue are removed, Dr. Ahmadi will lift the breasts. The surgery is very common with patins that are experiencing shoulder pain, or back pain or are lacking confidence in their aesthetics due to their breasts. All plastic surgeons will advise against any heavy lifting while you’re healing.
