What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the surgical placement of breast implants to increase fullness and projection of the breasts. This is the second most common cosmetic procedure done among women today. Restoring breast volume and balance can greatly enhance personal satisfaction and confidence.
What is breast lift (mastopexy)?
Breast ptosis (sagging) commonly occurs following pregnancy, aging, and weight loss after procedures such as Lap Band or gastric bypass. A breast lift can restore the normal shape and position of the breast as well as add support to the breast tissue.
What is breast reduction?
Women with large breasts frequently suffer from neck, shoulder and back pain. Furthermore, skin irritation and infection may occur under the breasts. Breast reduction can alleviate these symptoms by reducing the size of the breasts and restoring the normal shape.
Do I need breast lift in addition to augmentation?
Breast augmentation does not correct sagging breasts. In cases where a woman desires to enhance breast fullness and at the same time improve the position and shape of sagging breasts, a breast lift may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation. If the nipples have dropped below the under-breast crease, your surgeon may offer breast lift instead or in addition to augmentation, depending on the desired final volume.
Where are the incisions for breast augmentation?
Breast implants can be placed through a variety of incisions including axillary (under the arm), periareolar (around the nipple), inframammary fold (near the crease under the breast) or transumblical (through the belly button). The choice of incision varies based on the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired, patient anatomy, and patient and surgeon preference. Most surgeons choose to use the inframammary incision for ease, faster recovery, less risk and less damage to breast tissue and milk ducts.
How do I decide what size breast implant is right for me?
This is the most important step in the process. Choosing a small implant does not usually provide the gratification sought from this procedure. On the other hand, large implants can cause significant problems including unnatural figure, early bottoming out or back and shoulder pain. Through years of experience, we have found that choosing the implant size should be a compromise between the patient's desire and her physique. This is where your surgeon's expertise and experience can be extremely helpful. Your surgeon can guide you in this process. During your consultation, our patient coordinator will assist you to "try on" different size sample implants. This way you will have a clear idea of what you will look like after the surgery.
What’s the difference between silicone and saline breast implants?
There are many factors involved in choosing saline vs. silicone implant. The important thing to remember is that the choice of implant will not affect your final look. However, silicone implants may feel more natural in select patients with little breast tissue. Silicone implants are more expensive and are placed through larger incisions than saline implants.
How do I take care of my implants?
After your operation you will be placed in a specially designed bra to support the implants while your body heals. We recommend you wear this bra for at least 4 weeks after which you may use other bras as long as they are supportive (i.e. under-wire). Within a week after your surgery, you will be taught how to massage the implants. This maneuver performed on a daily basis helps the formation of a soft capsule around the implant.
When can I get back to work after breast surgery?
Most patients return to "office" work within one week after their operation. You should not resume strenuous exercise before four to six weeks following your operation. Mild activity such as walking is OK.
